I Heart Hiroshima play at the old Depot space (299 Brunswick St.) as part of new club night GOSSIP!. One of their last shows before an extended hiatus.
I've been listening to and thinking about this band a lot lately, they play with the kind of honest passion I'm always searching for in music. Everything about the band is almost too perfect to the point you start freaking out at how perfect Thee Oh Sees are. Inspiring.
Sky Needle is a band consisting of Joel Stern, Alex Cuffe and Ross Manning. They play self made "unstruments" and describe their sound as 'a couple of steps up from banging rocks together in a cave and a couple of steps down from modern music.' This show was for the launch of their 7" 'Time Hammer' and for what it's worth, I highly recommend it.
The location was at the abandoned Gasworks in Newstead, described by someone as 'Steel Henge' which is pretty accurate. Very surreal show, this band rules. More info at Independant Exhibitions.
Blank Realm perform at an art opening in Hamilton. They played as an accompaniment to some Brisbane Super 8 short films from the 80's, was cool. Everett True and Matt Earle (xNoBBQx) also performed.
This footage is from a show back in August at Book Nook in West End. Scraps is Laura Hill and she's written some of the best damn pop songs this country has heard, mate. Add her on Myspace.
Canberra's Assassins 88 play Brisbane for the very first time. Totally great band that mix the Lightning Bolt aesthetic with 60's pop sensibilities. They have just released an album "Go Go Second Chance Virgin" which can be downloaded for free at Dream Damage.
Real Bad Music Festival was a 3 day event held at an abandoned sex shop in Moorooka, "The Magic Mile".
Best lineup of the year unfortunately on a Sunday night with the majority of people on the tail end of a wasted weekend. All of that was forgotten when Lightning Bolt blew everything the fuck away. Goddamnit.
SLUG GUTS
Slug Guts closed their set with a cover of Primitive Calculators' "Pumping Ugly Muscle" joined by Stuart Grant on vocals.
ABJECT LEADER
"Abject Leader is a 16mm films duo that performs live expanded cinema peices which emphasise the analogue, the handmade, the photo-chemical and the acoustical." Their Website.
GREY DATURAS
Grey Daturas' last ever show in Brisbane on their final tour.
PRIMITIVE CALCULATORS
LIGHTNING BOLT
The crowd almost imploded into the band, totally great. Big thanks to Sally Golding for filming them for me. Lightning Bolt's website.
El Joyero is a shop front in Northcote that has only started putting on shows in the last few months. Super Star, Kitchen's Floor and Ghosts of Television also played this night but my video camera couldn't handle it.
I'd strangely never heard of these guys before but Neu! is one of my favourite bands and they pull off the krautrock thing really well, enjoyed it a lot.
Brisbane shows how dead it can be on a Wednesday night with a poorly attended yet awesome lineup at The Troubadour. I have to apologise to Michael Beach who headlined this show, I ran out of film but he was really good and worth checking out.
Blank Realm are universally regarded as one of the best bands in Australia. For this show their bass player, LUKE SPENCER, was in India for some psychadelic reason so they played as a 3-piece performing mostly new material and yet still came out with the goods.
I thought it was worth posting another video of the White Cop show from The Step Inn 25-09-09 as the repercussions from this show have resulted in a lifetime ban from that venue including the patronage of it's members. Punk rock.
Brisbane lets loose for Sydney bands Royal Headache and Bed Wettin' Bad Boys. Blank Realm also put on an awesome show. Good time had by all. Thankyou to Sarah Spencer for filming Royal Headache.
"Bask in the ooze, baby. A shitty, pissy stew of lysergic ineptitude and all that pure shit, pure sleaze, pure faggot drunk noise. Primordial oooooozzze. Old people are so dumb, your so boring. Your so pretty. Cut me. Make me feel good. Gimme bennies. Gimme danger. Get on stage and blow every member of the band. Hate WHITE COP."
The lineup was mindblowing, I haven't looked forward to a show as much as this one for a long time. Pink Reason was the best thing I've seen in ages. Great fucking band mate.
This was filmed by the Trapdoor Tapes guys when they were still kids, it's from January 2006 which is pretty far away in terms of modern time. It was in a half-house in Annerley where I learnt how to drink red wine. Great video.
I've seen Blank Realm play dozens of times and they're always great but this was greater or something. Guest starred Harriet Hudson (Good God, Downtown) on guitar.
FAMILY JEWELS
Nic struggled with his gear for most of the set but it still worked out.
