GLEN SCHENAU / PSY ANTS / GUTTERS / EXTRA FOXX AT LATROBE TCE. 3-07-10

What do you do when there's nothing happening on a weekend in your town? Rent out some DVD's and call it a quiet one? No damnit, you put on a show in your freaken house. ARGH.

GLEN SCHENAU

Glen Schenau - Per Purpose, Marl Carx, Kitchen's Floor. 'Comfortably awkward' acoustic set, enjoyable. Second video is a cover of the Beasts of Bourbon song 'The Day Marty Robbins Died'.

PSY ANTS

Formerly SCIENCE, the renamed PSY ANTS own tonight with a brutally doomed set of Brisbane proportions. One of my favourite live acts of this city.

GUTTERS

VIDEO + REVIEW REMOVED BY REQUEST

EXTRA FOXX

Extra Foxx brings the night to a laid back end with a lot of songs about winter. I guess it was cold.

SCRAPS / EXTRA FOXX / HEART FLEW LIKE AN ARROW / LEWIS O'LEARY & THE CUCUMBERS AT CUBBY HOLE 10-06-10

Gosh! What a nice n' relaxed Thursday night of music from some of Brisbane's overlooked finest. Gosh! Every second post on this blog seems to be from a show at Cubby Hole. Gosh! I woke up too early today.

SCRAPS

I was born a Scraps fan and I'll die a Scraps fan, damnit. If this doesn't make you feel nostalgic for those days as a kid growing up in a housing complex on the Gold Coast then you aint me.

EXTRA FOXX

"What's the set gonna be tonight, Conwae?" I asked the man behind Extra Foxx right before the show.
"Pure sex" He slurred, confidently puffing away on a cigar and wearing his best suit. I stared.
"Or the lack of," he added. Great set.

The second video 'Horses' is a cover, originally by Sally Timms of the Mekons and was also performed by Will Oldham. Thanks Wikipedia.

HEART FLEW LIKE AN ARROW

Heart Flew Like an Arrow is like liquid. It changes a lot and moves squishy and uh, that's all I got. Shit analogy. Anyway this aint bad, it caters to my preference of 3 piece bands - Straight to the point and no jerking around.

LEWIS O'LEARY AND THE CUCUMBERS

Lewis O'Leary and his band of misfits perform neurotic folk tunes to close out this fine evening and the $5 I paid to see it all was well spent. Gosh!

THE END.

EXTRA FOXX AT RIC'S 28-04-10

Wearing a suit for the occasion, Conwae Burrell aka Extra Foxx treats the dozen or so people who showed up to a great set of downer hits with Per Purpose/Loose Grip drummer Joe Alexander keeping the beat.

EXTRA FOXX

This was my first time at the newly renovated/under new management Ric's and wasn't expecting much but it's actually pretty alright now. I freaking hated old Ric's. Sure it was alright when I was 18 and didn't know any better but by the end almost every decent band in Brisbane was banned from the place which was stupid and lame. Nu-Ric's is cool, the staff aren't jaded jerks (yet), you can drink/smoke out the back and the place doesn't smell like piss anymore. Hell yeah.

UNIQUE BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS AT THE BOUNDARY HOTEL 16-01-10

This was a fundraiser for new art/music label Unique Beautiful Flowers. It was shut down early due to complaints from regular Boundary patrons who were a bit weirded out by it all. A damn shame because a lot of bands didn't get to play. Here's what I managed to film:

EXTRAFOXX

Conwae Burrell is the man behind Extrafoxx and besides being a master of the downer pop song, is a Brisbane legend. His album "The Saddest" has just been released, featuring 35 tracks of depression fuelled triumph. Check it out.

SCIENCE

Science are a new band who haven't played many shows yet and ended this show by destroying shit (unfilmed). 2 piece bass/drums no wave/metal/post rock/whatever music. Pretty fun to watch.

CURED PINK

Formerly Cured Pink RADIO, tonight it's a one man show starring Andrew Mclellan. I think this is where the trouble with the venue started - brutal noise mixed with psychotic performance art aint appreciated at this pub, mate.

DISSAPOINTMENT RAY

Dissapointment Ray was a collaboration between Brisbane noise icons Joel Stern and Lloyd Barrett. Good thinkin' music.

Footage of Blank Realm might be up in the next few days. Might. Stupid camera.
