Epic Sunday house show at Thrill Hill - good bands, messy vibes, classic Brisbane etc. it was nice to share it with all the visiting Sydney people.

BRICK BRICK - THRILL HILL HOUSESHOW MAY 12 2018

Poster by Heidi Cutlack.

Brick Brick host a somewhat impromptu house show at Thrill Hill, which is where the band began.  This was also the last time we'll play there as certain bricks move overseas, so you could say this was the final set in our little natural environment.  There was even an unplanned BENT reunion who played through a catalogue of some of their greatest hits.

BRICK BRICK

Thanks to Glen Schenau for once again filming Brick Brick.

SOOT - VIA STUDIOS MAY 11 2018

Poster by Tia.

A surprisingly effective solution to any venue woes is to hire a rehearsal room for a couple of hours, charge $5 at the door and cram everyone in there.  Get on board the brrrrrrrrrrrr* Bowen Hills train cause we're going to Via Studios.   A couple of weeks ago I posted about Soot but the footage was really dark and like most of the stuff on this blog, basically unwatchable.  Not this time damnit, the lights stayed on and Soot were awesome.

Things got BYO messy and I didn't film the other bands but Hexmere were sickkkkkkkkk.

TIM & THE BOYS / BINLICKER / BRICK BRICK - NETHERWORLD APRIL 28 2018

Poster by Joe Sukit.

A free Saturday night show at the quite popular Netherworld Arcade Bar (formerly The Step Inn and The Underdog).  This was an album launch for Sydney's Tim & The Boys with Brick Brick and Binlicker supporting.  The venue was packed to capacity which made navigating around a bit of a mission and it was also practically impossible to get a turn at Daytona.  The complimentary food and drinks were excellent however and generally it was pretty darn fun.

BRICK BRICK

Brick Brick's 4th show and I thought we done alright.  Thanks to Daniel Grosz for filming.

BINLICKER

Another fine example of new Brisbane music, Binlicker were great.  Half the band gimped it up and Shan dressed as his favourite Street Fighter character.

TIM & THE BOYS

Sydney bands rule.  Tim & The Boys were awesome.

BRICK BRICK / THE GOON SAX / BLOODY HELL / SOOT / CENTRE NEGATIVE - APRIL 20 & 21 2018

Poster by Heidi Cutlack.

Fun times in Nambour at everyone's favourite place to go The Time Machine.  Besides providing all your vinyl/VHS/Sega needs, they were also kind enough to put on this donation entry afternoon show.

BRICK BRICK

Our 2nd Brick Brick show and I thought we done alright.  Thanks to Glen for filming.

THE GOON SAX

Real nice set from The Goon Sax.  While putting this blog post together I discovered they have their own darn Wikipedia page.  I tried to make one for Kitchen's Floor awhile back and it got rejected because they said we weren't important enough or something so uh, well done Goon Sax.

BLOODY HELL

New band up from Melbz, Bloody Hell features Michael of Centre Negative fame and Joel of Men With Chips/Body Horror fame.  Brisbane's own Glen Schenau filled in on bass duties at the last minute.  He learnt all their songs while on the train to the show.

SOOT

After the show at The Time Machine we all waddled on to the train back to Brisbane where there was an impromptu house show at Thrill HillSoot, one of Brisbane's finest new bands, took this dark little lounge room full of bleary eyed goon-kidz by storm.

CENTRE NEGATIVE

The night before was a show at Ric's with Pious Faults/Dez Thretz/Eyes Ninety/Centre Negative & Collapsicon.  Centre Negative from the mystical land of New Zealand played a great set, I spotted a few general randoms who wandered in looking a bit confused and annoyed by it all which was a laugh.  The crowd still demanded an encore though, and this footage is of that which is also a Chris Knox cover.  If only there were more shows at Ric's like this instead of the generic suburban rock stuff they've mostly been peddling the last few years.  Get back on the radar Ric's, like ya used to be.

THRILL HILL HOUSESHOW - 24 MARCH 2018

Poster by Heidi Cutlack
It's 2018 and the immortal Brisbane houseshow is back.  Red Hill and the inner west is where it's at.  This was a really nice show on a Saturday afternoon turned evening, with Karli White up from Melbourne along with Manners/Blend 42 From Outer Space/Glen Schenau/Brick Brick & Terorist.  Here is a pic of Glen:

And here is Brick Brick, a new band I'm drumming in with Heidi (Bent/Scaredy Snake) and Phoebe fkn BMX with a guest appearance from Tristan (Cannon/Manners). Our first show! In Heidi's laundry! This song is called Monsters:

This one is called House Show Song (working title):

You reckon we did a Placebo cover? Course we fkn did.

Karli White was fantastic, Manners were sublime, Blend 42 was from outer space and Terorist was Teroristic.

Courtesy to Glen for filming BRICK BRICK.

Party on you redundant blogspot travellers.

EXILES FROM CLOWNTOWN / CANNON / BENT / CLEVER - LIVE IN IPSWICH 24 SEP 2016

The last surviving vestiges of an interesting local RnR community decide to get outta the cringe-fuck heckhole that is Brisbane and drive the western highway to the desolate hellhole that is Ipswich.  This show was an experiment to see if Ipswich can mentally handle anything more than hardcore and the answer is no they can't but it was fun anyway.  The Coronation Hotel in West Ipswich is a fine establishment with reasonable drink prices and a classic no bullshit wake in fright pub vibe that I can't speak more highly of.

EXILES FROM CLOWNTOWN

Ultimate SE Queensland cult band exiles from clowntown with their first live appearance in 18 months and by their own description "sloppy as fuck!".  Fuck their modesty it's fucking amazing.

CANNON

Cannon is THE band that keeps the party alive in Brisbane.  Most venues might be fading away from us freaks due to commercial considerations.  The ol' houseshow might just be a memory in 2016 but the party is always raging at the Murray's house and I salute their service to good time RnR and the timeless art of getting wasted.

BENT

Bent's last state show before heading south on tour.  Good luck Bent! The week before I drunkenly took home this really nice green corduroy hat from Heidi's kitchen table and I was wearing it all week round town feeling fuckin' awesome but I felt guilty because it wasn't my hat and finally the guilt became too much so I couldn't wear the hat anymore so I returned the hat at this show and it wasn't even Heidi's hat it was Pam's hat.  Don't let me near hats or alcohol or rock shows or humans anymore.  If you read all of that instead of watching the video you're either more lost than I am or you are Pam finally learning where your hat went for a week.  BENT best Brisbane band 2016.

CLEVER

If any of our silly big city Brisbane rock bands are gonna hit a chord with the people of Ipswich it's gonna be CLEVER right? fkn right, and I reckon they hit that chord wholeheartedly.  Most of what's happening in Brisbane sucks at the moment.  I hold a boring theory that with every medium-large city like Brisbane the quality and integrity of bands will always go up and down over time but lately I gotta say Brisbane has been lame lame fucking lame.  That sentiment excludes the bands/people I'll support to the death - I hope you know who you are otherwise ask me to find out but really if you have to ask I probably think you are mediocre and only adding to the mediocrity of this town.  Clever is fighting the good fight and fighting it with integrity, passion, and wasted abandon and it is awesome to witness as just another drunken idiot in the crowd.  As a whole though the war is lost when it comes to this music of minds shit and I feel Clever know it too.  Prove me wrong kids.  Create something new and great above the cute tropical nightmare university rich kid pop that pollutes the front pages of this place I dare you.

WORKSHOP / MARTYR PRIVATES AT THE UNDERDOG 19 JUNE 2015

Besides a nice variety of bands this show stands out for being one of the last held at The Underdog (formerly The Step Inn , formerly The Shamrock) and will probably be the last time I go there until it opens up again under a new name in 3 years time.  It was also the last Brisbane performance by Workshop for quite awhile.  It was also my birthday but you don't give a shit about that.  The sound quality on these videos isn't great due to my close proximity to the PA but they're still almost listenable.

---

Workshop

Workshop have been a fascinating addition to the Brisbane music landscape since their inception in 2013.  Enigmatic electronic compositions of conceptual perfection.  Much efficiency.  This song is "Luxury" from last year's Luxury EP (Tenth Court).

---

Martyr Privates

Martyr Privates perform with a new somewhat one off lineup.  Backing up frontman Cameron Hawes was old drummer Sam Dixon on bass (filling in for new bassist Kate Mackenzie), Aiden Reid (Psy Ants, Knee Chin) on drums and Matthew Somers (Rick Fights, I Heart Hiroshima) on guitar.  Tight and to the fkn point.

BENT / BAD BANGERS AT REAL BAD MUSIC 4 JULY 2015

Poster by Heidi Cutlack

Real Bad Music host a fundraiser show for Bent in support of their upcoming tour of Japan.  Many bands played and all had something unique to convey but I only filmed Bad Bangers and Bent.

Bad Bangers are a new 2-piece band with Alex Campbell from Gunk on guitar/vox.  Fresh sounding weirdo punk in drop D - consider me a fan.

Here is Bent performing "Skeleton Man", one of my favourites of theirs and also *trivia* the first song they ever wrote.

And here's a picture of Parts Unknown Weight Unknown which is a project of Mark Woodley and features a collection of the Brisbane old guard.

SEWERS / SPRAY PAINT AT WOOLLY MAMMOTH 12 JUNE 2015

Woolly Mammoth is Woodland under new ownership/management.  It's still very similar in appearance/setup to when it was Woodland minus a few aesthetic pieces and the pinball machine.  No drink specials though and only expensive beer - what the heck up with that.

Sewers

Spray Paint from Austin, TX, USA grace Brisbane for the first time playing their first show of a national tour in support of latest album Punters On A Barge.  Sewers were in support slot mode, gearing up for their impending invasion of the USA and release of new album Weight.

Spray Paint

Spray Paint were very decent despite a lousy turnout.  At one point Sewers frontman Shan Corrigan joined the band on vox for a drunken adlib cover of the Country Teasers tune Golden Apples.

Blank Realm were also meant to play but couldn't due to time constraints.  Gravel Samwidge played first, here is a pic I took of them do u leik it

Clever are a relatively new Brisbane RnR troupe comprised of members from Per Purpose, The Wrong Man, Psy Ants, AND MORE.  This footage is from a show at Alhambra Lounge in May with Martyr Privates and Excess (of which I was not able to get footage).  Clever fkn killed.

BENT / 100% AT PETRIE TCE HOUSESHOW 15 FEB 2015

Poster by Grace Stevenson
It's been 3 years since my last post on this blog and the Brisbane music landscape has changed considerably.  New bands, new venues and new weird lookin' young people, but the ol' DIY fundamentals are still kicking around in this strange future called 2015.  Case in point was this Sunday afternoon house show in Petrie Tce.

BENT

Bent are a band that really found their footing in 2014 with the release of debut full length Non Soon on Virtual Cool late last year.  This song is called Squares and Spheres and I think it might be a new one.  I liked it.

100%

This was 100%'s second ever show, after releasing an excellent 4 track demo in December.  This song is called Sour and is not on the demo so I'm guessing it is new.  It has been a joy to watch new bands like 100% along with other electronic synth influenced bands like Multiple Man and Workshop come to the forefront of Brisbane music in-between blog posts.

Meat Thump

This is a rough video collection of Meat Thump performances. The band was solely the work of Brendon but as you can see from the constantly changing line up, he had the support of many friends around him who helped to flesh MT out into a full band. These shows were all played to an audience of 20 people or less and, although Meat Thump did make it down to Sydney and Melbourne during it's brief slog, these are all from Brisbane.

WHITE COP

WHITE COP

A few weeks ago Brendon came over and while enjoying some beer and wine we started talking fondly about our much hated toilet punk band WHITE COP, which had broken up almost 2 years previous. We laughed at all the stupid shit that happened but Brendon told me that White Cop was the best 6 months of his life. It was his idea of freedom I guess. The band consisted of Brendon on guitar, Bill on vox, Noob on bass and myself on drums. I don't think we played more than 5 shows but we managed to record a 4 song cassette in December 2009. We also (strangely enough) made a music video.

The video was mostly shot around a vacant lot in Woolloongabba, across the road from The Gabba stadium. January 2010 I think. Afterwards we walked to the Red Brick Hotel and filmed some other stuff (Bill ordering a beer, Brendon playing Keno) before getting kicked out so we walked down the road to the Clarence Corner and shot the bit where Noob takes a piss. It was filmed by Glen Schenau and then edited together by Andrew McLellan.

The Clubhouse - November 12, 2009

This is probably the best live footage of White Cop you're going to get (There isn't much). It was an awful venue in Fortitude Valley which I think we were banned from afterwards. The show was insane and awesome with Bill offending everybody in the room then breaking the microphone within the first few minutes. Things just kind of went in a natural direction from there.

The cassette will be re-released soon on a one sided 12" through Leather Bar Records. Until then:

THE CLEAN / DEADNOTES / BLANK REALM AT THE ZOO 10-03-11

It's been something like 22 years since The Clean last played in Australia. (Yet the plane trip over from New Zealand only takes 4 hours, what the hell?!). Anyway I was damn excited, and damn exciting it was.

Epic as always, here's a bangin' new tune from Blank Realm.

DEADNOTES WITH EVERETT TRUE

The Deadnotes were really tight and as Everett True stated during their set, "I'm just glad to here". Definitely one of the best times I've seen them.

THE CLEAN

ALPS / BARE GRILLZ AT WOODLAND 5-03-11

Newcastle's Alps and Bare Grillz have spent a couple of weeks on tour in support of the new Alps album 'Alps of New South Wails'. Brisbane was their last show. Good dudes, fun times.

CURED PINK

I just had a completely shit night of horrific sleep and I feel about as healthy and wholesome as this new video from Cured Pink. Filmed under Brisbane's William Jolly Bridge a few days before xmas last year, it is a soothing visual/audio companion to the inevitable doom. The live footage was shot by Katie Martin, the audio was recorded by Joel Stern. Highly recommended.

Hells yeah. For the first time in it's 19 month history Eternal Soundcheck is in 'Hi-Def' - courtesy of Blank Realmer Luke Spencer who lent me his sweet camera for the day. This show happened under my house and was a follow up to the first Deadshits Motel show in November.
